Facebook filling your wallet…

According to a recent Nielsen study, 78% of respondents trusted recommendations from other consumers and friends over what they read in the media and from marketing hype. This is not surprising, as “word-of-mouth” has always been a highly dependable way of promoting products: People prefer to trust other people’s opinions over a one-way drone from the marketing machine.

Marketers are well aware of this; in fact I am willing to bet that everyone who is exposed to this blog has been exposed to a certain kind of advert. A (housewife/everyday person…etc) discusses the difficulties of trying to keep their (bathroom/kitchen/clothing…etc.) clean while looking after (growing children/busy husband…etc.). They are then introduced to a new miracle product through a (friend/neighbour…etc.) and has their world completely turned around by it’s inclusion in their life. “Colours are brighter, whites are whiter”…etc. These adverts have been around since I can remember, covering everything, from billboards to radio. The simple existence of these ads over such a long period of time is evidence of their success rate. People DO respond to the voice and opinions of the everyman.

Now, how does this tie into the realm of online marketing..? Well, the rise of social networks has created a whole new way for marketers to modify the aforementioned formula, and place it in a new network of people. Facebook has jumped on the bandwagon that is “Myspace Music”, and tweaked the formula. You can now become “fans” of artists and actors; even join groups dedicated to specific products and causes. People are also using their “Status Update” to inform their friends on their new purchases or on an event they plan on attending.

You may think that this is all trivial and does not bare any importance to you or your decisions. But when you see that one of your friends has become a fan of someone/something or that they are “Loving my new Nikes”, you immediately and unconsciously form a positive relationship with the mentioned object/person/event…etc. We do this because we trust the opinions of people that are similar to us, more so if they fall into our social circle.

I would not be surprised if marketing think-tanks are already jumping on ways to get users with lots of “friends” to mention their products on their Facebook page. This trend is already prevalent in the Blogsphere, bloggers use revenue earned by sponsors to keep their site paid for. In return, they often write a review on the sponsor’s product. One of my favorite blogs, OhGizmo, followed this trend by writing reviews on laser lights for their sponsor. This initial sponsorship helped keep the site up and running while it built it’s loyal following.

The site is now reportedly valued in the tens of millions of Dollars. Getting people to mention your product seems like a very cheap and effective way to get seen by millions of people, and I think will start showing up in a friendship circle near you soon. Marketing with this much reach should just be done sensitively, lest it becomes seen and treated as spam, and potentially ruining our experience with social networks...

Share your stories, without a blog....

Tokoni, a site where users can share their stories in the form of notes, photos and videos, was formally launched yesterday.  It’s being hailed as a YouTube for stories and was founded by a team of executives from eBay and Skype.

The site has been up for about a year, apparently, but only launched formally yesterday as the founders fiddled around fixing up bits and pieces for all that time.

I checked it out and, while I haven’t actually used the site to post stories, I did read a few this morning. While I didn’t spot anything that may win the Booker prize anytime soon, there are some interesting stories and it looks like a good site for aspiring writers and so on to post stories on a site specifically designed for story sharing.

It’s like blogging, but aims to make community-building easier and has some cool features like fan pages for different story-writers and tokens for users can give feedback on stories. It also puts stories into categories for easy searching (see the Science and Technology section for peoples thoughts on the iPhone, Skype, Wii and so on). Check the site out and judge for yourself....

Social Networks – the new content discovery platform

Social Networks could become the main means of content discovery, according to Entertainment Media Research’s 2008 survey. The survey mentions that 30% of users use social networks to search for new music and videos.

The survey also proved how important it is for brands to get involved in Social Media, showing that 22% of users click on ads shown on social networks, 20% of users said they would prefer to add brands as “friends” on Facebook.com and other social networks.

The survey also provided information on the impact the web has on print media. 30% of people are simply not buying newspapers and 22% don’t buy magazines as the content is already accessible online.

Facebook targets the enterprise world

Facebook has identified great opportunities in the enterprise world and endeavours to make its services more accessible to corporate users. Big companies have expressed their interest in Facebook, taking into consideration that at least 50 percent of their employees are already users –great percentage of whom are heavy users.

At the moment, Facebook is working on reference examples to illustrate how its platform can become an indispensable part of business world.

The first remarkable example is Faceforce. Faceforce integrates CRM data with Facebook profile information to provide an in depth –instant view of customers, prospects, and business associates.

We are looking forward to explore the new Facebook developments.

Do you Social by Mobile??

Neilson have released a news release about the number of people in the UK using social media sites via their mobile phones.  The big players are all represented with Facebook dominating with a 9% mobile internet reach.  As a Facebook user and an iPhone user I can vouch for the ease of getting around that site especially using the dedicated iPhone interface.

Although I am still trying to get my head around these stats:

(1) 44% of mobile subscribers belong to a social media site. One in four of these use their mobile phone for social media activities.
(2) 1.7% of mobile phone subscribers visited a social media site each month in Q1 this year.

- Isn’t (1) saying that approx 10% of mobile users access social media sites, while (2) is saying that only 1.7%, but  I am sure those stats guys know what they are talking about!

The travel social network site WAYN showed the biggest discrepancy with PC internet, jumping from the 27th most popular PC web based social site, to be the 7th most popular mobile internet social site.  Must be a lot of backpackers facing big international roaming charges when they get home...

I can only see the use of mobile social growing as people feel the necessity to update the world with every little moment of their life - I already see too many 'train from Reading delayed' kind of status updates as it is!

Microsoft turns its attentions to Facebook

Although Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said that his company isn't pursuing any other major deals immediately following its failed $47.5 billion takeover bid for Yahoo, it is now being reported that they have made subtle enquiries regarding Facebook (I suppose not that subtle if it is in the news) .

Last October, Microsoft bought a $240m stake in Facebook, which is about 1.6% of its worth. However Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has previously resisted selling the entire company, favouring the idea of a public offering.

I wonder who else in Web 2.0 should be expecting calls...

How not to moderate a forum

Creative Labs have shown how not to use a company forum by threatening one if its forum users with legal action for improving their software drivers.  Creative Labs makes sound cards for PCs and their sound cards perform better in Windows XP than they do in Windows Vista.  I have a Creative sound card on my PC with both Vista and XP installed and it is true that there is a difference.
Creative have a forum on their site where users go to troubleshoot their issues with their various products.  I have visited this a couple of times as I have a couple of Creative products and the community is pretty good at responding to questions - answers coming from both moderators and (seemingly) regulars.
A lot of people noticed the problems with their soundcards performance in Vista and one of them, user Daniel_k, actually created his own software to get around the problem.  He posted links to his software from within the forums and had been doing so for a while until it came to the attention of Creative's Vice President of Corporate Communications - Phil O'Shaughnessy who issued a warning (you can read it in full here ) directed at Daniel_K accusing him of theft and telling him to stop distributing the drivers.

A quote from the post "By enabling our technology and IP to run on sound cards for which it was not originally offered or intended, you are in effect, stealing our goods."

This was an unfortunate way to do things as it was like shouting "we are crippling our products and don't you try and fix it!"  You could kind of understand where he was coming from if the product wasnt advertised as being Vista compatible.

So now the forums are full of spiteful posts from disgruntled customers.  Post titles include "From a FORMER long time customer", "Even the Titanic sank" and "Creative vs its customers".  If this guy is producing great drivers for its software they should have just given him a job.  I dont think this is a case of any publicity is good publicity.....

Google buys Facebook

In the wake of stories of falling stock prices and that Google is lagging behind in the race to dominate the social media arena, the search giant has sent shockwaves through the sector today with an announcement that it has made an offer for a controlling interest in FaceBook - currently the largest social media networks, and one of the fastest growing sites in the world. Last October Microsoft paid $240 million for a 1.6% stake in FaceBook in what was widely touted as a coup for Microsoft over Yahoo! and Google.

At the time Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt kept the door open to a collaboration between Google and FaceBook. Until now Google's own social networking application Orkut has only found true success in Brazil and commentators believe that Google, a veteran innovator, does not want to loose ground in the race to dominate Web 2.0 which has been described as a new operating system that exists on the web rather than in a computer. Traditional media companies are also vying for control with the News Corporation buying MySpace in 2005 but FaceBook has outstripped MySpace in terms of growth and advertising revenue so Google may now have decided to buy its way in instead of building its own application.
