Google contractor sues Google over Google Sky Layer

By Naeem Dollie | 18 February 2008

A contractor from Google named Jonathan Cobb will be suing Google for supposedly stealing his Sky Layer idea. Sky layers are data in both graphical and textual form that are used in Google Earth. He is suing Google for $25 million in punitive damages, in an Atlanta federal district court.

Cobb claims that in 2006 he posted this idea in an internal email group at Google. In 2007, when ‘Google Sky Layers’ was launched, Cobb claimed it contained a similar interface and had much of the functionality he dreamed up.
